The Episcopal Church is...

  • Local: St. Luke's was originally founded as a mission and later became a parish.  St. Luke's has been part of the Wamego community since the early 1870's and will celebrate 150 years of ministry and mission in 2020.
  • Regional: St. Luke's is an integral part of the Diocese of Kansas, which includes 44 churches in the eastern half of the state of Kansas.  We are lead by a bishop, and the diocesan seat is in Topeka, Kansas. St. Luke's is part of the northwest convocation within the Diocese of Kansas.
  • Global: The Episcopal Church (TEC) is part of an American denomination that has churches in 21 countries and is an integral part of the Anglican Communion, which has 80 million members around the world.
  • Universal: A middle way between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, we find our balance and center by the grace we receive in both Word and Sacrament. As a sacred tool, our Book of Common Prayer is the centerpiece of our worship and life together as Episcopalians.

The Episcopal Shield

This symbol, which you will see at every Episcopal Church, is the official "logo" of The Episcopal Church (TEC), and represents our history.

It is red, white and blue...the colors of both the USA and UK.

The red Cross of St. George on a white field is symbolic of the Church of England.

The blue field in the upper left corner is the Episcopal Church of the   U.S.A.  It features a Cross of St. Andrew, in re-cognition of the fact that the first American bishop was consecrated in Scotland.

This cross is made up of nine cross-lets or mini crosses, which represent the nine dioceses that met in Philadelphia in 1789 to form the Protestant Episcopal Church of the U.S.A. But, the cross-lets are not visible in this crayola representation above.
